  • 1901 Fire

    Fire struct Subiaco Abbey on December 16, 1901, when the original monastery on the ridge was completely destroyed. A fire in the detached kitchen building spread to the wooden monastery structure and shortly the entire monastery was destroyed. Only Subiaco College and a few farm buildings remained after the fire. Luckily, the monastic community had already begun construction on a new monastery some distance north. On June 15, 1904, the new monastery would be blessed and dedicated. 

    Provided below are some photos showing that early monastery expansion, the newly established Subiaco College, as well as the aftermath from the fire.
