With the forced move to virtual learning in the final weeks of the 2020 Spring semester due to COVID-19, members of the maintenance department and numerous volunteers assembled to begin demolition of the interior of Alumni Hall. For this particular job, masks and protective equipment were worn for dual purposes. The crew operated swiftly to prepare the interior of the building for the conversion that commenced in early June. Once again utilizing the talented members of our maintenance department provided a significant reduction in the renovation cost. This was no small task as they worked toward a hard deadline of late December to make the building operational for the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year.
Headmaster, Dr. David Wright, announced the renovation as a giant leap forward for the institution. “Much needed updates to this building created a vibrant and state-of-the-art space for future Trojans,” he said. “The programs within the newly revised space enhance and promote entrepreneurship, an important component of the Academy’s overarching curriculum.”
The concept of the building renovation began with an exploratory committee including the headmaster, maintenance director, and science and mathematics department chairpersons traveling to multiple cities and school districts to tour facilities there. Plans were drawn, and the structural and mechanical engineers produced a top-notch design for this iconic structure. The classroom and laboratory settings include modern equipment and both individual and community learning areas on both levels of the two-story structure. The exterior of the building received a facelift to enhance the already impressive facade of the structure. Dr. Wright noted, “The modern classrooms and collaborative learning spaces accentuate the outstanding teaching opportunities that the Academy students enjoy in these important academic disciplines.”
From the student perspective, it’s all about the excitement of learning in a futuristic setting. These young minds don’t yet fully grasp the impact this renovation will have on them but you can be assured that one day they will understand that it came about through the unified effort of the Subiaco Family-always Onward Together.
In an effort to make space for the renovations in Alumni Hall which included adding natural light, windows were installed in the hallways of the building where the Alumni class composite pictures once
hung. Those images are now visible electronically on a large screen TV in the upper floor hallway near the east entrance. The composites are visible on a timed scrolling series or, using the computer near the
TV, one can select the class year they are interested in viewing. In the future, we hope to provide a touch-screen TV for quick and easy selection of the images. The original images are all housed in the Abbey archives and have been digitally scanned. The images can be shared electronically if you desire. Contact the Alumni office at [email protected] to request the class years you prefer.
